When driving in Portugal, many of the roads are subject to a toll collection system through an electronic system without the possibility of manual payment on the spot.
On these roads there are no facilities for drivers to stop and pay in cash or equivalent, therefore, as you go through each number plate you are registered.
Toll sections are clearly indicated by a sign before starting, specifying "electronic toll only". There are signs that show the toll fee for each class of vehicle, on each road, so you will see how much it will cost to use that particular road.
All vehicles must have a transponder / via green device. Failure to pay a toll will incur a fine. The fine is 10 times the toll, with a minimum of 25 euros. The authorities will check the records of all vehicles traveling on roads with electronic toll charges, and if you fail to pay tolls within the legal timeframe, you will be fined.
You can rent the transponder device to Via Verde for your Madlobos Rent a Car car for a small daily fee. It is an electronic device that transmits your identification code and allows Madlobos Rent a Car to automatically charge you your toll and travel smoothly in Portugal.
